Choose a chunk of wood (we picked a circular log slice), source an electric drill and away you go. You can either create a pattern, or go all gung-ho at random. Remember to use a drill bit for wood (not masonry) and create different depths and thicknesses to encourage a menagerie of insects to stay. If you’ve never used a drill before, make sure there’s someone experienced on-hand to help.

This is such a fun and easy way to make a thoughtful, homemade Christmas gift – and you probably have most elements in a cupboard already.
